CHAPTER 8

REVIEWING THE BASICS

1. Identify three things that may cause monitor flicker.

A slower refresh rate then what is recommended, poor cable connections , and having items around the monitor with high electrical noise.

2. Describe what to do if you have just spilled soda pop on your keyboard.

Either you can simply replace the keyboard or you can try rinsing it under running water but you must make sure it dries thoroughly before using it.

3. Explain how to check that chips on a video card are properly seated in their sockets.

Remove the card from its slot then use a screwdriver to press firmly on each corner of each chip.

4. When troubleshooting problems with a monitor in Windows XP, why would you enter Safe Mode?

Because it allows the OS to select a generic display driver and low resolution.

5. Describe how to boot Windows XP into Safe Mode.

When you first start up your computer, before the OS screen there will be a screen where you can enter some utilities, this is where you press F8 to enter safe mode in Windows XP.

6. Why would an external modem cost more than an internal modem?  Not found in chapter but external modems cost more because there is more to them meaning they are in their own case and they require a cable to connect to the computer with where an internal modem does not.
7. Name three possible ways a scanner might interface with a motherboard.  USB, FireWire (IEEE 1394), Serial
8. By definition, what system resources does COM1 use? COM2? COM3? COM4?

     COM1- IRQ4, I/O address 03F8-03FF COM2- IRQ3 I/O address 02F8-02FF COM3- IRQ4 I/O address 03E8-03EF COM4- IRQ3 I/O address 02E8-02EF

9. What is the display resolution for standard VGA settings?  Up to 640x480
10. What is the maximum length of a serial cable?  50ft according to RS-232 standards
11. To what does RS-232 refer?
12. How many pins are on a typical serial port?  25
13. What is the name of a barcode reader that is a gun-type reader that can be handheld and is often used at a checkout counter?  CCD (Charge-Couple Device)
14. What is the purpose of a keyboard wedge?
15. What is the name of the technology within the chipset that controls the speed of serial ports?   UART (universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter) 16550
16. Why might you choose to use ECP mode for your parallel port rather than EPP mode?  To increase the port's transmission speed and improve system performance by bypassing the CPU through the use of a DMA channel.
17. When might you need to disable ECP mode for a parallel port?  When the use of ECP mode causes DMA conflicts.
18. How would you disable a serial port on a motherboard?  Through CMOS setup.
19. What Windows OSs support USB? Include the OS version numbers where that information is important.  Windows 95 OSR 2.1, though Windows 98 provides much improved USB support, and all workstation versions of Windows thereafter expect Windows NT.
20. What is the maximum speed of Original USB? Of Hi-Speed USB?  Original USB's max speed is 12Mbps; Hi-Speed USB supports speeds up to 480Mbps.
21. What is the maximum length of a USB Hi-Speed cable?  5 meters (16 feet, 5 minches)
22. What are two other names for FireWire? What is the highest data throughput approved for FireWire?
23. When selecting a motherboard, why would you prefer to use PCI Express for the video card rather than AGP?
24. What is the most important disadvantage of using biometric devices to authenticate a person to have access to a system?
25. What criteria affect how much video RAM is needed for a video card to hold one frame buffer?
26. Give three examples of monitor screen sizes. How are monitor screen sizes measured?
27. What are two advantages of setting an LCD monitor to run in its native resolution?
28. What type of CRT monitor can offer a variety of refresh rates?
29. How many pins are used in the IEEE 1394 connector that supports the IEEE 1394b standard?
30. How many keyed notches does an AGP universal slot have?
31. What makes a device an ergonomic device?  when a device designed for safe and comfortable interaction between human beings and machines. HP
32. How many pins are there on a DIN connector and a PS/2 connector for a keyboard?  din has 6 and pin has 9. HP
33. What three colors are used to build all colors on a color monitor screen?  Red, Blue, Green. HP
34. Which gives better image quality, a .25-mm dot pitch monitor or a .28-mm dot pitch monitor? Why?

So 25mm dot pitch is better because the horizontal resolution of the screen with the smaller dot pitch will be sharper. If you compare a screen display with a .25mm dot pitch on a 17-inch monitor to one with a .28mm dot pitch on a 21-inch monitor, you may not notice any loss of clarity. This is because larger monitors have a larger dot pitch. HP

35.  If a mouse begins to be difficult to operate, what simple thing can you do to help?  if is a roll ball mouse clean it!!! HP
