Owner Cheryl Hill has been rescuing dogs since 1988.  Until 2001, she maintained a no-kill shelter located near Milton, PA.  When the opportunity arose to move to a more spacious, rual location, she took with her 26 canine residents.  The shelter is now located in the beautiful mountains of central Pennsylvania near Sunbury.

  • What is the mission of Mostly Mutts Inc.?

  • How many dogs are normally at the shelter?
The number varies, but is presently over 80.

There are six buildings on the property. Each building has electricity, heat/air conditioning, and a direct water supply. To ensure comfort for the dogs, the buildings are also equipped with indoor and outdoor lighting, radios, bedding and blankets.

  • How long, on average, do dogs stay at the shelter?
The length of each dog's stay varies immensely. There are some that have stayed their whole lives, others only days. Certain breeds of dogs are adopted faster than others. Puppies are usually adopted fairly quickly, while larger dogs are more difficult to place.

  • What is the adoption process like?
Please see our "Adoption Process and Application" link page located on the home page.

  • What are the current adoption fees?
They are listed on the adoption application and vary according to gender, age, and breed of dog.
Generally, they are the costs already invested in the dog (shots, vet care, etc.).
  • Is there anything a new owner needs to do once the adoption process is finalized?
You can read more about the adoption process in "Adoption Procedure." Use the link on the home page.

  • Does the shelter accept donations?

The shelter is located in rural Sunbury, PA.  An appointment must be made to visit!

If you would like to volunteer, please complete a volunteer registration form. This information will help us to understand your talents and abilities as well as provide contact information. After your application is received, someone will contact you to arrange a time for orientation and will give directions to the shelter.

If you want to adopt a dog, you must first complete an adoption application.  Use the "Adoption Process and Application" link on the home page.  When the telephone interview, reference checks and home visit are complete, a time can be arranged to visit the shelter.

  • Why aren't the directions on the website?
The shelter is privately owned with a limited amount of space.  The location is not publicized to discourage "dumping off" of dogs.  Directions are given to volunteers who've completed a volunteer application and to applicants who've been approved to adopt.
